What is the XYZ Affair ? In 1795 the Americans and the British came up with the Jay's Treaty which was to fix the conditions between the United States and Great Britian. This angered the French and they started to seize American Ships. President Adams trying to avoid open war with France sent three delegets to work out the problems and to create a treaty. The three delegets were Elbridge Gerry, Charles Pickney and John Marshell. These three American delegets approached the three French delegets who demanded a gift of 250,000 dollars to Talleyrand, the French minister. They also demanded ten million dollars to France before they could even go to the government of France. Unwilling to agree with this negotiation the three men came back and told President Adams.President Adams then sent out a declaration to congress that stated he would no longer communicate with the French unless they sent someone who respected them and the government. Many Americans were angered by this and wanted to go to War with France. A undeclared naval war broke out between the two countries which later resulted in the Treaty of Mortefontaine. This treaty was released in the 1800s and it improved the relationship betweent the two nations.
